The Methods of Cleaning and Rust Removal for Machine Parts
Machine parts may rust or have oil stains due to residual lubricating oil or improper storage for a long time. Therefore, cleaning and rust removal must be carried out. Cleaning is generally done in two parts, namely rough washing and clean washing. The following are some methods of cleaning and rust removal machine parts.
1. Oil washing method
Diesel, kerosene, and gasoline are good solvents. The remaining oil stains on the parts can be dissolved in it, such as anti-rust oil, sludge, etc. Because the solvent is lighter and has low viscosity, residues adhering to the parts will settle to the bottom to achieve the purpose of purification.
The selection of the above solvents, according to their applicability, can be carried out as follows. Light diesel oil is selected for the cleaning of steel parts. Because kerosene has a high acid value and contains a small amount of water, it is not easy to remove after cleaning, which will cause the parts to rust again. It can be used for rough washing or initial washing of parts. Gasoline has a strong ability to remove grease and is volatile and can be used for cleaning or fine washing of machine parts.
2. Alkaline washing method
Alkaline cleaning solvents can be divided into two types: strong alkaline and weak alkaline, which are formulated according to the needs of parts cleaning.
The strong alkaline cleaning agent is made by mixing sodium hydroxide (0.5~1.0%), sodium carbonate (5.0~10%), or other strong alkali and water, and is used to clean general steel parts.
The weak alkaline cleaning agent is made of trisodium phosphate (5.0~8.0%), sodium dihydrogen phosphate (2.0~3.0%), and other weak alkalis and water, and is used for cleaning steel and aluminum alloy parts. Alkaline solvents are mostly used for cleaning large parts due to their low cost. The solvent is heated to 60-90°C during cleaning, soaked or rinsed for ten minutes, and then rinsed with clean water to remove the remaining alkali and wipe off.
3. Pickling method
The acidic cleaning agent is made by diluting 6% or 10% solution with sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid and water. Used for washing steel parts with complex shapes, grooves, and cavities, or slight rust. In order to wash away the acid left on the parts, neutralize it with an alkaline cleaning agent, and then clean it with water, dry, or thin engine oil.
In addition to the above methods, there are other methods, such as wiping and cleaning some small precision machine parts with alcohol or banana water.
